Bonnaroo (2008) : Bonnaroo - The mother of all music fests. Woodstock for the new millenium. Over 100,000 people camping out in a 700 acre field in Manchester, TN for three days in complete anarchy.
We cheated serious injury (and death) for another year.
We also reunited Camp Rubber Chicken (we met with our neighbors from last year's trip).

I got lost for over 8 hours on the first night of Bonnaroo 2006 (couldn't find my campsite in the middle of a cold rainy night). Never mind the fact that I was a three-year veteran. I also got lost for a few ours the year prior. I vowed never to let this happen again. That's all I would need for inspiration to buy a GPS. I then figured out a way to automatically stamp any photos that I take with my digital camera with the location I took the photo. That's all I needed to make it a no-brainer. I didn't even come close to getting lost since (even finding my way in the pitch black crowd after to exactly where we were sitting for shows after a bathroom break). I also turned it on for the entire weekend (whenever I could remember). Our location on earth (within 6 feet of accuracy) was stamped every single second. The tracklog shows that we walked over 12 miles in those few days (again, whenever I remembered to turn it on.) What a long strange trip it was.
I have posted all of the GPS data (waypoints, tracklog, photo geocoding, etc.) collected over the weekend here:
Google Earth (KMZ)It may take a while to load up, so be patient. Try doing a "play tour" on any of the paths and you can watch from our point of view.

Open Water Certification : I've gone on a few "discovery/resort" SCUBA dives (in Mexico, of all places,) but that's like going to kindergarten without an "accredited graduation."
I've always wanted to get certified so I could go on cool dives on my own, and my boss was getting his family certified so now was the time. It was going to be a cram, though, as they were going on a vacation where they could dive within a couple of weeks. It took a few hundreds of dollars, 8 hrs in the classroom, 8 hrs of pool work, a written final exam [100% and a free T-shirt!!!], and 5 open water dives - all signed off by a certified instructor. And we did all of it within 8 days.
Here's some pics of the day "I graduated" of my final open water check-out dives at Falling Rock Quarry in LaGrange, KY).
Some memorable moments of the dives - all of the skills/exercises required to get a cert, a navigational test that brought us to a sunken Louisville Metro police car, a few free dives through sunken treasures such as various boats, household appliances, sculptures, etc... and a personal solo dive to the bottom (max depth of 45 feet.) Never did make it to the phone booth or culvert, though.
Next up: thinking about after-grad work (specialties!)

Turkey Fry of 2007 : Didn't go home (New Orleans) for family time for Christmas this year. My trip has been "postponed" to a couple weeks later (to be near the Superdome when LSU plays for the BCS NC). My family, all hardcore LSU fans, understand.

Instead we decided to fry a turkey on Christmas Eve. My company gives every employee (all 40,000!) a turkey for Christmas. I usually just donate mine (some bowl with it the weekend later), but I took it for some reason this time. I got the wild hair to attempt to fry my turkey in the middle of Theatre Square (downtown Louisville) on Christmas Eve. There was some daunting seconds during the drop, but other than that it went smoothly. We also had trouble getting the oil up over 300 degrees (we guess it was the fact that it was 30 degrees outside!) We added some extra time in hopes it would come out well... and very surprisingly, it was superb. Either we had beginners' luck or there's quite a margin of error of wiggle room when the ultimate outcome is judged against the traditionally baked version. The risk is definitely worth the reward - and it's quite a spectacle if you build a turkey fry derrick like we did.

The entire credit for our success on our virgin endeavor goes to Alton Brown's episode on Good Eats (Food Network), which we found available on YouTube.

There were multiple possibilities for disaster which we never never would have thought. What brought us home was our commitment by refusing to skimp on his easy, cheap, and safe instruction.

I now live in Kentucky. I'm the president of the Kentucky Chpater of the LSU Alumni Association. I had no idea what I was doing but somehow tried to pull together a tailgate experience for the game (including joining with the Indiana Chapter of the LSU-AA).
By game time, LSU was unaminously ranked #1 for the first time in 50 years. Kentucky just lost to South Carolina, who LSU didn't have much trouble with the week earlier.
After four hours of regulation, then an additional three overtimes, the worst case scenario came to be. Bluegrass Miracle #2.

Green River (Kentucky, 2007-08-11) :
The old faithful canoe/campground on the Blue River in Indiana no longer offered camping at the end (owner had issues with alcohol on the campgrounds... hrmmm.)
We found a new place on the Green River (Munfordville, KY). There's a lot of aspects that make up a good overnight canoe/camping trip (for us), and never has any place meet them all. This place did.
Less than an hour drive
Laid back atmosphere (re: drinking/camping on the river and strict timelines)
Extremely good outfitter (Big Buffalo Crossing) that went overboard (no pun intended) at accomodating us
Several trip options (paddle length, put-in/take-out/campground locations and drive-ability to each). Our mission was to take-out and camp at a site where our cars were waiting (with the heavy gear.) We never had to make a single put-in or take-out reservation time - even after Kit's truck broke down and set us back an hour on arrival. Big Buffalo Crossing even shuttled us around like a makeshift emergency road service, yet still were completely amazing at accomodating, then even extending, our goals with a non-advertised trip itinerary.
Clear, deep (even in a drought) river with no trash or other things to break the isolation - we heard only two cars in over 8 hours of paddling
Beautiful scenery, w/springs, waterfalls, etc. for our entire paddle
Not something ever expected, but something that will change as people find out about this place: we never overtook, were overtaken, or even saw any other paddlers the entire two day trip.

Awesome. It's our new home. Can't wait to head back during fall.
PS: Most of the photos are geo-coded, however the tree canopy blocked the satellite locks occasionally. I didn't have my GPS at all on the second day. Check out the "Google Earth feed" at the bottom of this page for some cool geographical pic browsing.

Cedar Point :
You wouldn't think a city called "Sandusky, Ohio" would be home to one of the best thrill parks, but it certainly is. Their latest creation is usually a superlative in one of many factors (innovation, height, speed, design, propulsion technology, etc.) until somebody else raises it a notch.
Ever since I heard of this place I've wanted to take a trip. One of our pilot friends offered to fly us up and back in the same day in his 4 passenger (+2 pilots) twin turbo-prop plane, and we jumped at the chance.
Top Thrill Dragster is one of those rides you'll never forget. I've ridden hundreds of coasters. I expected a lot, but I was nowhere prepared what it delivered. Absolutely mind blowing. It felt like I was in the Spies Like Us centrifuge scene.

Violent Femmes at 4th Street Live! : Sure, I've seen them too many times to count. This night was special, though; James (of BBC) supplied the beer for the band (they had a "local beer clause" in their contract rider). For that, he received two VIP passes which he gave one to me. We got there while the opening band was still playing, entered the VIP area, and met our contact. He said that missed the Meet n' Greet (which we didn't know about) by 10 minutes. Oh well - it was still a great area to watch from, cool industry people, and free beer. And you can't beat considering a price of $0.

SEC Championship (2001) : Way back in the beginning of November, Frat Brothers White bought 26 tickets to the game... at least a month before LSU punched their own ticket to play in the game. The hunch paid off and we had a rip-roaring time.
Tigers pull off a major upset in the 2001 SEC Championship. Tennessee was picked to win this game then go to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl - to battle Michigan for the national championship. The Tigers clobber them and their title hopes are gone.
The Tennessee fans outnumbered LSU fans 8:1 (Knoxville is an hour drive from Atlanta; Baton Rouge is 8+ hours.)
After the game, the "LSU bar" in Atlanta (technically in Roswell) ran completely out of all alcohol. A party, indeed.

Downtown UberCrib (1997-1998) : I only got to live in this apartment for a little less than a year, but it is, to this day, the greatest place that I have ever lived. It won "Best Apartment in Mobile" by one of the local rags a couple of years before I got it. It's in an 180-year-old building above the main strip in Mobile; work was four blocks away and all the nightspots you could want started on my block. There is a fantastic balcony that overlookeed a the town square/park, a cathedral, and "main street." Plenty of people watching spent on that balcony.
This apartment's availability was never advertised, and you had to be good friends/family of the owner/landlord just to know it of its availability. One of my co-workers was one of those people. You had to go through an interview process just to be considered. I went and looked at it, did the interview, and talked the owner into signing the lease the next day. And it was even cheaper than the one I was moving from. The only problem is that four months after moving in, my company announced they had been bought out by a company in Louisville; if I wanted to keep my job I would have to move there within a year. Which is exactly what I did. My entire stint in Mobile lasted less than two years, which is too bad because I really liked it.

Early Preparations : I was in Chicago the day before Katrina. I'm on the phone with friends and family here. My mom, as she put it, was "making some spaghetti and waiting for your dad to get out of the shower" - and didn't evacuate until 6pm that night. They left for Houston (due west) but had to follow the evacuation route north - all the way until they hit Shreveport (near the Arkansas border) before they could head back south again. I gave them highway directions/mileage over the cellular as I looked their current locations up on the internet. 12 hours after they had left Katrina's eye made landfall with the Gulf Coast. They didn't get to Houston until 5 hours after that.

Some of the dorkiest pics of all time... but that's what you do when you are at the bottom of the totem pole (ignorant freshman pledges) but still think you're at the top of the totem pole (high school graduates).

I received my 8th-12th grade education at Jesuit High School in New Orleans, and graduated in 1989. Those times certainly were a blur. Growing up in New Orleans wasn't all that easy (I'm now just starting to realize this), and I'm actually quite lucky I made it through alive. I could legally drive (by myself) when I was 15, and legally drink when I was 18. Needless to say, my buddies and I jumped the gun a little bit on some things. New Orleans was an 18 year ongoing party for me. Actually, it was just prep for LSU (known to Louisiana natives as "The Thirteenth Grade.") But that's for another page...

1984 Nissan 200sx : I had my first car for less than a month. On the night of August 11, 1987 (two months before my 16th birthday), I fell asleep at the wheel. (Yes, I was sober. Not a drop of alcohol; I just got back from a week in Disneyworld, though.) I left my girlfriend's house, which is a 40 minute drive from mine, and got to the last highway before I got home. It's a straight, long, boring 5 miles with only 2 stoplights. I set the cruise control to 50 mph, then apparently nestled in for the night.

If you have a weak stomach, you might just want to leave this page now. Go ahead and hit that back button (don't say I didn't warn you.)

The car hit a storm drain while I was still asleep (therefore I was still going 50 mph), it cocked it airborne, and within 10 feet the car came to an immediate stop, wrapping around (literally) a large telephone pole. The worst, of course, was yet to come and I'm lucky I went into shock. I'll spare you the gory details, but the pole was nice enough to hit perfectly at the driver-side door - crushing me between it and the center console (yes, I was wearing my seatbelt.) They almost released me from the hospital, thinking I only had a hairline fracture in my pelvis. Right before I was discharged, I went to take a leak. Within 10 minutes I was in the O.R. having emergency exploratory surgery. The hairline fracture was more like a crack, and there was enough bone movement that my urethra was separated (they're connected). A broken pelvis bleeds more than other bone fractures (just my luck), which caused heavy internal bleeding in my abdomen. Since my bladder was no longer connected to my urethra, it was floating up my chest on a pool of blood.

It was finally decided that the best treatment was to stop the bleeding, insert a catheter (it could have been worse; this catheter actually came through a hole near my navel instead of the usual entrypoint,) and "sew" me back up (47 staples). They could then let the blood clot dissipate "normally", (they predicted it would take a year), and then my bladder would have settled back down close enough to where it was feasible to connect my urethra back to it. It actually only took 8 months for this process, they hooked me back up. I'm making it sound a lot easier than it was, but there were lots of infections, drug interactions, and above all else pain along the way.

Then there was the time I developed kidney stones - which not only blocked the flow through the catheter, but also jammed the mechanism that releases the catheter so they could exchange it. That was such a traumatic event that they agreed it would be easier to knock me out completely in an O.R. to get my monthly cathether exchange. I was on crutches for the first few months, too. And I was supposed to attend highschool as normally as I could.

It was time for the final re-plumbing operation, but it had only been done 20 times in the history of medicine before. When they rolled me into the O.R. for that last time, there were 20 doctors from all over in the room, apparently there for the "learning experience."

Needless to say, after 3 or 4 years of therapy (and having to go in for a capacity and flow urinalysis weekly), I eventually got back to 100%. Everything eventually worked the way it did before, and this was very much progressively encouraging news for a guy entering his Junior year in high school, as you could imagine.
Wasn't that a nice story?

ImprovOlympic's 25th anniversary show was meant to propel this Chicago institution toward Second City-like status, with performances by such famous alumni as Mike Myers, Andy Richter, Rachel Dratch and Amy Poehler. Instead, this pricey August event at the Chicago Theatre was an artistic and technical disaster in which unrehearsed performers attempted to wing it in the less-than-intimate auditorium while malfunctioning microphones caused almost an hour's worth of delays plus a do-over for the show's first 15 minutes. Not even the offer of refunds worked: The line at the box office grew so long and angry that officials abruptly cut it off.

Wrigley Field : What can you say about
Wrigley Field that hasn't already been said? It bums me out a little bit that I missed
Harry Caray doing the game, but it was still neat
and filled with mystique (right down to it being sold out and we had to pay $30/ticket for
standing room only. That's right, we actually had to stand in the aisles.) It
was still cool and the Cubs won, by large margins, every
game they played while I was there (and they were in quite a slump!)
One interesting story is when we were standing in the aisle watching the game and
two kids walked up to us with identical shirts. They stopped, kinda turned away from
us, and said "they had samples of them in the back of their car if we wanted
any." I didn't know what the hell he was talking about, but after I looked at
the back of his shirt with 20 different "flavors" of pot drawn all over it, I
got the idea.

Gauley (1999) :
Whitewater Rafting - The Gauley - Class V+
We heard all the rave reviews about how great this river was. The book
Wildwater West Virginia described the Upper Gauley as
"Sixteen miles of swirling, crashing, pounding end." Another good quote that sums
up the river is, "It's big, it's long, it's inaccessible, it's tough, it's dangerous, it's intoxication."

It's ranked #2 in the nation and #5 in the world by whoever ranks these things (#1 is the
Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, which I doubt I'll be able to visit any time soon.)
So how was it? It didn't disappoint. To try to get a feeling of what it was like,
check out this article located on the
Great Outdoor Recreation Pages website, entitled,
"Good Gauley! West Virginia's Whitewater Mecca."
By far, our best trip ever, this thing was a challenge - especially for me. I fell out of
the boat at least three times, and we have it all on videotape. The rapids were awesome, as there was a good mix among Class IV through Class V+ rapids. You can't get any higher than that (Class VI rapids are considered unrunnable and against the law.) We also surfed a hydraulic for at least thirty seconds (well, my raft did - I was pitched out of it at around the twenty second mark.)

Ocoee (1997,1998) : Whitewater Rafting - The Ocoee - Class III-IV
We hit the Ocoee River (in more ways than one) at the end of June '97 and August '98. The Ocoee is located at the Tennessee and Georgia borders and has plenty of Class III and a few Class IV rapids. On the first trip I managed to stay in the boat (although I drank a lot of water) all the way until the end - when I encountered HellHole, a little Class IV rapid. I rapidly became dislodged from the boat.
Our guide hadn't been on the river in over a year so he "forgot" about which sweet spots to follow. Somehow we all made it through the '98 trip (water was high because of El Nino.)

						The College

							LSU was dubbed by Sports

Since 1990, no other college baseball program has had more success in Omaha

Bonnaroo (2004) : Bonnaroo - The mother of all music fests. Woodstock for the new millenium. Over 100,000 people camping out in a 700 acre field in Manchester, TN for three days in complete anarchy.
This was the first time I went (as well as Missy's only time), and I can promise you this... I had no idea. Lessons were defintely learned for the following years.
Let me give you an idea of how it started, for instance.
First, the only vehicle we could take was my one year old Mustang convertible
It was a four hour drive from Louisville and we left at 3am. We arrived at our interstate exit, a mere mile-and-a-half from the ticket gates, near the expected time (the overpass picture is timestamped at 6:34am, which includes our timezone change). However tired I was by working and packing all day. we caught our second wind because we made it and the fun was about to start. I pulled up to the back of the line of traffic on top of the offramp's overpass (photo) and cracked open my first beer of the weekend. Then my second. Then my third through sixth (after that I lost count). We arrived at our campsite around 1:00 p.m. You read that right: 6.5 hours to go the last 1.5 miles. Let me do a little math for you, putting my bachelor's in engineering degree to good use (or anybody that finished their first year of high school.) Using the good ol' "RTD" (Rate X Time = Distance) formula, we can determine that our average speed for
